What looks like a trunk is a pseudostem, meaning “false stem.” It is built entirely from the tightly rolled, overlapping bases of the leaves (the leaf sheaths), wrapped around each other like a rolled-up magazine until they are firm enough to stand 6 to 20 feet tall. Slice one and you find soft, watery, layered tissue rather than rings of wood.

The real stem stays underground. Bananas grow from a fat, starchy underground structure called a corm (often loosely called a rhizome). All of the plant’s growth pushes up through the center of the pseudostem from that corm, much the way a canna lily works. In very harsh climates a little afternoon shade prevents leaf scorch, and shadier conditions actually deepen the green if you are growing it purely for foliage. But more sun means more energy, faster growth, and a better chance at fruit.

Soil. A banana wants deep, rich, moist, well-drained soil heavy with organic matter. Dig in plenty of compost or well-aged manure before planting; freshly made hot compost can damage the corm, so let it mature first. A slightly acidic pH, around 5.5 to 7, suits them best. Use a deep, sturdy pot with large drainage holes and a quality loam-based potting mix amended for drainage (a portion of perlite helps). And in any cold climate you can simply accept that the banana is a foliage plant that will not fruit — enjoy the summer display, protect or store the corm, and start fresh each year. Fruiting takes a long time, plenty of warmth, and patience

Even in good conditions, a banana is slow to reward you. From planting, a fruiting variety typically needs 9 to 15 months to flower, and then another 2 to 6 months for the bunch to fill out and be ready — often around 10 to 14 months total. Cooler conditions stretch every stage, and some heat-loving cultivars simply never bloom in a marginal climate. This long, warm runway is the real reason fruiting belongs to warm zones: a cold-climate banana usually gets cut down by frost before it can finish.

If you are serious about fruit, pick a variety suited to your area, give it your sunniest, most sheltered spot, feed and water it hard, and be patient through more than one season.

The purple “banana heart” and the seedless fruit it produces

When a banana is finally ready, a flower stalk pushes up through the center of the pseudostem and bends over into a large, teardrop-shaped purple structure — the banana heart or inflorescence. Root rot is the classic killer of overwatered and poorly drained bananas. The corm and roots cannot tolerate standing water, and rot, once established in a large plant, is very hard to reverse. Prevention — well-drained soil and disciplined watering — is the only real cure.

Spider mites and aphids show up most on plants brought indoors or grown under glass, along with mealybugs and scale. These sap-suckers weaken the plant and aphids can spread viral diseases; knock them back with insecticidal soap or neem oil, and inspect regularly.
