The mango tree (Mangifera indica) rewards patience with one of the most fragrant, sun-soaked fruits you can pull off a branch in your own backyard. It is a deep-rooted tropical evergreen that can soar past 100 feet in the wild, yet with the right variety and a little pruning, the same tree settles happily into a warm corner of the garden or even a large pot on the patio. If you live where winters stay frost-free, or you are willing to wheel a container indoors when the cold arrives, homegrown mangoes are well within reach. Here is everything it takes to plant one, keep it healthy, and coax it into fruiting.
A mango tree needs heat, sun, and protection from frost
Mangoes are strictly tropical to subtropical. They grow in the ground in USDA zones 9 through 11 and tolerate brief dips no lower than about 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius). Most varieties survive a short brush with 30 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 1 degree Celsius), but foliage and flowers take damage and a hard freeze can kill a young tree outright. In the continental United States, the reliable in-ground zones are the frost-free pockets of Florida, southern California, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.
Gardeners in cooler regions are not shut out. A mango can be grown in a container in zones 4 through 11 as long as it spends the cold months in a heated space. Either way, the tree wants the same thing above ground: full sun. Six hours of direct light is the bare minimum, and eight to ten hours produces the best growth and heaviest fruit set. Plant in an open, south-facing spot away from buildings and taller trees that would cast shade.
Mangoes also crave humidity and warmth in summer. The sweet spot for active growth and ripening sits between 80 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit (27 to 38 degrees Celsius). Shelter the tree from strong, drying winds, which can shred large leaves and knock developing fruit to the ground.
Well-drained, slightly acidic soil keeps the roots healthy
A mango is forgiving about soil type but unforgiving about wet feet. It performs best in well-draining, loamy or sandy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, roughly 5.5 to 7.5. Interestingly, mangoes often crop better on soils of moderate rather than high fertility, so there is no need to over-enrich the ground.
Before planting, test drainage by filling the planting hole with water and watching how fast it empties. The tree can shrug off occasional flooding, but standing water invites root rot, the most common way home gardeners lose a mango. Start with a dwarf variety bred for confined roots, such as ‘Ice Cream’, ‘Cogshall’, ‘Nam Doc Mai’, or ‘King Thai’. These stay manageable at six to eight feet with pruning, while a standard cultivar would quickly outgrow any pot. Because mangoes drive down a long taproot, choose a deep container, at least 18 inches deep and ideally working up to a 20-gallon size as the tree matures. Fill it with a high-quality, free-draining potting mix rather than dense garden soil.
A container mango still demands eight to ten hours of bright light. Outdoors in summer this is easy; indoors in winter it is the hard part. Watering follows a wet-then-dry rhythm

Young trees do want some nitrogen to build a framework of foliage, but choose a tropical-tree or citrus blend with no more than about 6 percent nitrogen, and apply a balanced feed in spring, summer, and fall through the first few years.
Once the tree is established and bearing, swap to a blend higher in phosphorus and potassium, which encourage flowering, fruit development, and strong roots, and cut nitrogen back sharply. Feed every two to three months from flower set through the end of harvest. A simple organic approach works well too: mulch heavily with rough material like hay, top-dress with compost, and use a fish or seaweed foliar spray to supply trace elements without overfeeding. Pruning keeps the tree small and the canopy open
Mangoes respond beautifully to pruning and forgive heavy mistakes, so do not be timid. Pruning serves three goals: controlling size, opening the canopy to light and airflow, and removing dead or diseased wood.
Begin shaping early. When a young tree reaches about a meter (roughly three feet) tall, cut it back by a third to force branching; tip those new branches again when they reach a similar length. Because mangoes flower at the tips of branches, more branches mean more potential fruit, and tip pruning multiplies them. Select three to four well-spaced scaffold branches that leave the trunk at a wide angle of at least 45 degrees, and remove vertical wood crowding the center so light and air reach the whole canopy. A grafted tree is the dependable route. It fruits in roughly two to three years, stays a more manageable size, and gives you the exact variety on the label, riding on a rootstock chosen for vigor. For most home gardeners, this is the better buy.
Growing from seed is rewarding and nearly free, but slower, with fruit typically five to eight years away and sometimes up to a decade. The catch most guides skip is the difference between seed types. A monoembryonic seed contains a single embryo whose fruit is a genetic gamble, often nothing like the parent. A polyembryonic seed contains several embryos that grow into clones true to the parent tree, so the fruit tastes the same as the mango you ate. If you want a seed-grown mango worth eating, source seed from a known polyembryonic variety such as ‘Kensington Pride’ or ‘Nam Doc Mai’.
To germinate, eat a ripe mango, clean the flesh off the husk, and let it dry a day or two. Carefully slit a corner of the fibrous husk just deep enough to open it without cutting the bean-shaped seeds inside, then plant a plump, white seed about a quarter inch below a moist seed-starting mix. Choosing a variety to match your space and climate
Mangoes vary enormously in flavor, fiber, size, and ripening time, so the variety you plant matters as much as how you grow it. ‘Glenn’ and ‘Honey’ (also sold as ‘Ataulfo’) offer sweet, low-fiber fruit. ‘Haden’, ‘Kent’, and ‘Tommy Atkins’ are widely available, while ‘Keitt’ has two harvest windows that extend the season. For pots and small spaces, the dwarf ‘Ice Cream’ and ‘Cogshall’ are standouts.
Match your choice to your conditions. In a cooler subtropical area, pick a variety that flowers reliably without prolonged warm nights and that resists anthracnose, especially where rain falls during flowering. If you have room for more than one tree, mix early and late croppers so you harvest fresh mangoes over months instead of a single feast-or-famine flush.
When a mango won’t flower or set fruit
Plenty of mango trees grow lush and green for years without producing, and the reasons are usually fixable. Flowering is triggered by cool nights, so a tree in a climate that never cools down, or one grown indoors, may simply never get the signal. Excess nitrogen is the other frequent culprit, pushing the tree into all-leaf, no-fruit mode. Cold snaps during bloom can abort flowers and cause young fruit to drop.
Some fruit drop is entirely normal: a tree sets far more tiny mangoes than it can carry and sheds the excess, so do not panic when most of the pinhead fruits fall. Mangoes are self-fertile, so a single tree will fruit on its own; you do not need a second one for pollination. If a healthy, mature tree still refuses to bloom, ease off the nitrogen, give it the pre-flowering dry period described above, and make sure it is getting all the sun it can.
Watch for these pests and diseases
A vigorous, well-pruned mango with good airflow fends off most trouble, but a few problems recur. Catching them early keeps damage minor.
- Mealybugs: soft, white, waxy insects that cluster in branch and leaf crevices, feed on sap, and excrete honeydew that fosters sooty mold. Knock populations down with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.
- Aphids: small sap-feeders in yellow, green, orange, or black that deform leaves and also produce honeydew. Hose them off, remove heavily infested leaves, or treat with insecticidal soap.
- Mites: tiny arachnids on leaf undersides that cause stippling and, in heavy infestations, leaf drop. They favor water-stressed or over-fertilized trees, so keeping the tree healthy is the best defense; treat outbreaks with horticultural oil.

- Anthracnose: the most serious mango disease, a fungus that blackens flowers, twigs, leaves, and fruit and worsens in wet, humid weather. Prune out infected wood, improve airflow, remove fallen debris, choose resistant varieties, and turn to copper sprays or fungicides only if losses are heavy.
- Powdery mildew: white powdery growth on flowers, young fruit, and tender shoots in warm, humid conditions; prevent it with airflow-promoting pruning and by keeping foliage dry.
Remove and discard diseased wood and old or fallen fruit well away from the tree, since both pathogens and pests overwinter on debris left in place.
Harvesting and ripening your mangoes
Fruit is ready three to five months after flowering, generally in late spring and summer depending on variety and heat. Judge ripeness by size, a color shift from green toward yellow, red, or orange, and a gentle give when squeezed. You can also cut into one fruit and check the flesh: fully green means hold off, while partial yellow means you can pick and finish ripening at room temperature, around 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit (18 to 22 degrees Celsius).
Harvest by clipping the fruit with a short length of stem attached rather than yanking it off, which protects both the branch and the fruit. Take real care with mango sap, which can spurt from a snapped stem: the latex burns skin, can cause dermatitis, and will scald the fruit’s own skin into a rotten spot. Hold cut fruit stem-down for a moment to let sap drain away from the flesh.
Ripe mangoes keep in the refrigerator for about five days, while unripe ones finish on the counter.
