The navel orange is the orange you reach for when you simply want to eat an orange. Sweet, low in acid, almost always seedless, and loose enough in the skin that it practically peels itself, it is the premier eating orange of the citrus world. Every navel you have ever picked apart at the kitchen counter traces back to a single mutated branch found in Brazil two centuries ago, and the tree in your yard, or in the pot on your patio, is essentially a living clone of it. Understanding what makes a navel a navel, rather than just “an orange,” is the key to growing one well and harvesting fruit at its peak.
This is a cultivar-specific guide. General sweet-orange care overlaps a great deal, so the focus here is on what is genuinely different about the navel: its strange double-fruit anatomy, why it has no seeds, why it makes a poor juice orange, and the few quirks of growing and harvesting it that catch people out.
What actually makes a navel orange a “navel”
Turn a navel orange over and look at the blossom end, opposite the stem. You will see a small puckered hole or a raised bump that looks remarkably like a human belly button. That feature is not cosmetic and it is not damage. It is a second, undeveloped fruit growing inside the main one, tucked into the peel at the bottom. A navel orange is, in effect, a fruit within a fruit. The little embedded segment cluster never matures into anything you would want to eat, but it is the literal reason the variety is named the way it is.
That conjoined twin is a byproduct of the same mutation that gave the navel all of its other defining traits. It is why the fruit is shaped the way it is, why it does not segment as cleanly as some other oranges, and why a ripe navel feels slightly heavier and denser at the base.
Why navel oranges have no seeds
Navels are seedless, and the seedlessness is not an accident of breeding that growers can switch on and off. It is structural. The original mutation left the flowers with sterile pollen and ovules that do not develop into viable seeds. Because the tree cannot complete normal fertilization, it sets fruit parthenocarpically, meaning the ovary swells into a full orange without any pollination or seed formation taking place. Fruit without fertilization, and therefore fruit without seeds.
This has a few practical consequences worth holding onto:
- Because there are no viable seeds, you cannot grow a true navel orange from seed. There is no seed to plant. Every navel tree in existence has been propagated vegetatively, by budding or grafting a piece of an existing navel onto a rootstock.
- That means every navel orange tree is, genetically, a copy of that first Bahia mutation. When people say all navel oranges are essentially clones, this is literally true. The Washington navel, the Cara Cara, the Lane Late and the rest are all bud sports and grafted descendants of one freak branch.
- The tree is self-fruitful and needs no pollinizer partner to crop. It will set its parthenocarpic fruit entirely on its own.
There is a flip side to that sterile pollen that surprises people: a navel orange makes a poor pollinator for other citrus. If you are growing seedy varieties that depend on cross-pollination to fruit well, do not count on your navel to do the job, because its pollen is largely non-functional. The navel takes care of itself and contributes little to its neighbors.
Flavor, and why navels are for eating, not juicing
The navel earns its reputation at the table. The flesh is sweet, the acid is comparatively low, the segments are tender, and the loose, moderately thick rind slips off with little effort. There are no seeds to spit and no fight to peel. For eating out of hand, slicing into a salad, or candying the zest, few oranges are easier or more pleasant. The fruit holds 10 to 12 segments under a slightly pitted, oil-glanded skin that perfumes the whole kitchen the moment you break it.
What the navel is not is a juice orange, and this is the single most common point of confusion. The reason is a compound called limonin. Navel flesh contains a precursor that, once the fruit is crushed and the juice meets air and acid, converts into limonin, an intensely bitter substance. The result is that freshly squeezed navel juice tastes fine for a short window and then turns noticeably bitter, often within about half an hour. It is not spoilage and it is not your imagination; it is delayed bitterness, a documented quirk of this fruit’s chemistry.
So if you are juicing for the sake of juice, varieties like Valencia are the classic choice. If you do juice navels, squeeze only what you will drink immediately. For everything else, the navel’s sweetness, easy peel, and seedlessness make it the orange you actually want in the bowl.
Season: a fruit of winter
Navel oranges are a cool-season crop, and that timing is part of their appeal. The tree blooms in spring, the fruit develops slowly through summer and fall, and harvest arrives in winter, peaking roughly from late autumn into the new year, with later-maturing types extending the supply into spring. Where many edible gardens are quiet, a navel is loading up with bright fruit.
The cold matters for more than the calendar. Navels need a stretch of cool nights to develop both their deep orange color and their full sweetness. In genuinely tropical, frost-free heat the fruit can stay greenish and taste flatter, because that cool trigger never arrives. A little winter chill, just short of damaging frost, is exactly what this fruit is built for.
Growing a navel orange tree

Climate and where it will grow
Navel oranges are reliably grown outdoors in USDA hardiness zones 9 through 11, with zone 8 possible only with serious frost protection. They are frost-sensitive evergreens. Mature trees can shrug off a brief dip toward the low 20s Fahrenheit, but fruit is damaged at higher temperatures than the wood is, often around the mid-20s, so a cold snap during a winter harvest can ruin a crop even if the tree survives. In the United States, commercial production centers on California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida for exactly these climate reasons.
If you live colder than zone 9, you are not shut out. Navels grow well in large containers that can be wheeled indoors for winter, which is covered below.
Sun, soil, and planting
Give a navel full sun, at least six to eight hours of direct light a day; more sun means better flowering and better fruit. Where winters bite, the south or southeast side of a building gives the tree extra warmth and wind shelter. Allow generous space, on the order of 12 to 15 feet from structures and walkways for a standard tree, less for dwarfs.
Soil must drain freely. Navels resent wet feet, and poor drainage is the fast road to root rot. A slightly acidic, sandy loam in roughly the pH 6.0 to 7.0 range is ideal. Heavy clay should be amended with organic matter, or the tree should go into a raised bed or a container instead. Work compost or well-rotted manure into the planting area, but skip moisture-holding additives like peat layered around the roots and do not pile mulch against the trunk.
Plant in early to mid-spring in most climates so roots establish before the next winter; in very hot regions, fall planting into cooler soil works better. Because navels are grafted, set the tree so the graft union sits a few inches above the soil line and never gets buried, since a buried union dramatically raises the risk of root and crown rot. Dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than it, backfill with loose soil, and water in well.
A note many people skip: pick off the small amount of fruit a young tree tries to set in its first couple of years. Letting a juvenile tree carry fruit steals energy it needs to build a strong frame. Sacrificing those early oranges pays off in a healthier, more productive tree later.
Container growing and overwintering indoors
A navel in a pot is the standard solution for cold-climate growers, and it works. Choose a dwarf or semi-dwarf tree on a size-controlling rootstock and a container of at least 15 to 20 gallons for a maturing tree, ideally on casters so you can move it. Use a free-draining citrus or cactus-type mix rather than dense, water-holding potting soil, and make sure the pot has open drainage holes.
When frost threatens, bring the tree inside. The goals indoors are light, restraint, and air. Place it in your brightest window with six or more hours of light, adding a grow light if the spot is dim. Water less than you did outdoors, since indoor air and cooler temperatures slow the tree’s uptake; let the top couple of inches of mix dry before watering again. Pause feeding through the dormant cold months. Watch for scale and spider mites, which love the warm, dry conditions of a heated home, and keep some air moving around the canopy to discourage fungal problems. In spring, harden the tree off gradually before it goes back outside so the foliage does not scorch.
Watering
Water deeply and then let the soil dry somewhat before the next round, rather than keeping it constantly soggy. For trees in the ground, a thorough soak roughly once a week is a reasonable starting point, adjusted up in heat and during fruit development and down in cool, wet weather. The simplest gauge is your finger: push it a couple of inches into the soil near the tree, water if it is dry, and wait if it is still moist. Keep water off the trunk by using drip or a soaker hose. Container trees dry out faster and usually need watering more often; saturate until water runs from the drainage holes, then let the mix become slightly dry before repeating.
Feeding, and the deficiency to watch for
Citrus are hungry, nitrogen-loving trees, and a navel does best on a dedicated citrus fertilizer rather than a generic all-purpose feed. Feed through the active growing season, roughly late winter through late summer or early fall, following the product’s rate, and stop feeding once the tree goes cold and dormant. Do not fertilize at the moment of planting or right after a transplant; wait a few weeks for new growth to appear first.
The deficiency note that matters specifically for citrus: navels are prone to micronutrient shortfalls, especially zinc and iron, which show up as yellowing between the leaf veins while the veins themselves stay green. Before simply adding more fertilizer, confirm your citrus feed actually includes those micronutrients, then check soil pH, because a pH that has crept too high locks those nutrients away even when they are present. An acidifying citrus fertilizer that supplies chelated micronutrients usually corrects the problem.
Pruning lightly, and no pollinizer needed
Navels need very little pruning. They fruit on new growth, not old wood, so heavy shaping is unnecessary and over-cutting only removes the flower buds that would have become oranges. Confine yourself to the basics: remove dead, damaged, diseased, or crossing branches, thin the center a little to let in light and air, and cut out any suckers rising from below the graft union, since those come from the rootstock and will never bear your fruit. Late winter or early spring, just before new growth, is the best timing. Always cut suckers flush and use clean tools.
On pollination, relax. A navel is self-fruitful and sets its seedless fruit without any pollinizer, bee visit, or second tree. You do not need a partner plant. Just remember the earlier warning in reverse: because the navel’s own pollen is poor, it will not reliably fertilize seedy citrus you may be growing nearby.
Harvesting: taste-test, and let the tree be your fridge
Two facts govern navel harvest, and both run against people’s instincts.
First, oranges do not ripen further once picked. There is no countertop softening or sweetening as there is with a peach or a banana. The sugar in the fruit is whatever it had developed on the tree at the moment you cut it, full stop. Color is a clue, since cool weather drives the change from green to deep orange, but color alone can mislead. The only dependable test is to taste one. If a sample fruit is sweet and to your liking, the crop is ready; if it is still tart or flat, leave the rest on the tree to keep developing.
Second, and conveniently, navels store beautifully on the tree. Rather than picking everything at once, you can leave fruit hanging for weeks after it ripens and harvest as you want it, treating the tree as a slow outdoor refrigerator. Quality eventually declines if you wait too long, but the holding window is generous, and later-maturing navels in particular extend fresh picking across months. To pick, twist the fruit upward and off, or snip it with clean clippers; yanking it straight down can tear bark. Off the tree, whole navels keep a few days at room temperature and several weeks in the refrigerator’s crisper.
Common problems
Established navels are not fussy, but a handful of issues recur.
Leaf drop. Some leaf loss is normal, but a sudden flush of dropped leaves signals stress, most often from cold injury, waterlogged roots, drought, or a hard environmental swing such as the shock of being moved indoors. Diagnose the cause rather than reflexively watering or feeding; a tree dropping leaves from soggy roots only suffers more if you add water.
Fruit split and fruit drop. Navels are prone to splitting at the navel end, especially when a dry spell is followed by heavy watering or rain that makes the fruit swell faster than the rind can stretch. Steady, even moisture is the best prevention. Likewise, some flower and small-fruit drop is natural self-thinning, but heavy drop usually points to heat stress, irregular watering, or a swing in the weather.
Sour or dry fruit. Disappointing fruit usually traces back to climate and timing rather than disease. Fruit picked before it accumulated enough sugar tastes sour, which is why the taste test matters. Insufficient cool weather can leave fruit flat and pale. Dry, pithy, light-feeling fruit (sometimes called granulation) tends to come from overripe fruit left too long on the tree, very young trees, or moisture and nutrition irregularities. Consistent care and harvesting at true ripeness solve most of it.
Pests and diseases
The pest and disease lineup is shared across citrus, but a navel grower should know the headline players.
- Asian citrus psyllid and HLB (citrus greening). This is the serious one. The tiny psyllid spreads Huanglongbing, also called citrus greening, an incurable bacterial disease that causes blotchy yellow leaves, lopsided bitter fruit that stays green, and steady decline before killing the tree. There is no cure; management means controlling the psyllid, buying only certified clean nursery stock, never moving citrus material across quarantine lines, and removing infected trees. Many citrus-producing states regulate the transport of citrus plants for exactly this reason, so check local rules before buying or moving a tree.
- Scale insects. Soft and armored scales cluster on twigs and leaves, excreting honeydew that grows sooty black mold, which in turn shades the leaves and reduces photosynthesis. Beneficial predators often hold them in check; where they do not, horticultural oil applied to coat the insects works well, and indoor container trees especially need watching for scale.
- Citrus leaf miner. The larvae tunnel serpentine silvery trails just under the leaf surface, curling tender new growth. Damage is mostly cosmetic on established trees and rarely needs spraying; pheromone traps and simply tolerating it on mature trees are usual approaches, with young trees benefiting from a little extra protection.
- Mites, thrips, and aphids. Mites stipple and can defoliate stressed trees; citrus thrips scar new leaves and young fruit surfaces; aphids cluster on soft new shoots. All three hit weak or young growth hardest, so a vigorous, well-watered tree is the first defense, with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil in reserve for heavy outbreaks.
- Root rot (Phytophthora). Driven by wet, poorly drained soil and a buried graft union, it shows as general decline, yellowing, and sometimes gumming at the trunk. Prevention is the whole game: plant in free-draining soil, keep the graft union well above grade, and do not overwater.
Cara Cara and the navel’s colorful cousins
The navel is not a single fruit but a small family of bud sports, all descended from that original mutation, and a few are worth seeking out.
The standout is the Cara Cara, a pink-fleshed navel discovered in Venezuela in the 1970s as a sport of the Washington navel. It looks like an ordinary orange from the outside, but cut it open and the flesh is a striking rosy pink to red, the color coming from lycopene, the same pigment found in tomatoes and watermelon. It is even sweeter and lower in acid than a standard navel, with berry-like and faintly floral notes, and it is, of course, still seedless and easy to peel. People sometimes assume the rosy color makes it a blood orange, but it is not one; true blood oranges get their deep crimson from different pigments (anthocyanins) and belong to a separate group, while the Cara Cara is a genuine navel with a blood-orange-adjacent look and a milder, sweeter taste.
Beyond Cara Cara, the navel lineage includes the workhorse Washington navel, the source of most supermarket navels and the variety that built the California citrus industry, and later-ripening sports such as the Lane Late and other “late navels” that hold and mature their fruit further into spring, stretching the season for both growers and home gardeners. There are even oddities like the brown-skinned, extra-sweet chocolate navel. All of them share the same essential package: seedless, parthenocarpic, sweet, easy to peel, and carrying that telltale navel at the blossom end.
If you have room for only one orange tree and you want fruit to eat rather than juice, a navel, and very possibly a Cara Cara, is the one to plant. Give it sun, sharp drainage, a citrus feed with its micronutrients, and a little frost protection, then let the winter cool turn it sweet and pick it by taste straight off the branch.
