The good news is that a strawberry plant asks for very little: a sunny spot, soil that drains, a shallow drink most weeks, and a few seasonal chores that take more attention than effort. June-bearing strawberries deliver one heavy, concentrated harvest over roughly two to three weeks in late spring to early summer. The berries are the largest of the three types and ripen all at once, which makes them the pick for anyone who wants to freeze, can, or make jam. June-bearers also send out the most runners, so a single plant can fill in a bed quickly. Despite the name, you can buy early-, mid-, and late-season June-bearing varieties to stretch the window. Reliable choices include Honeoye, Earliglow, Jewel, Allstar, and Cavendish.
Everbearing strawberries (sometimes sold as perpetual) produce two to three smaller flushes, typically one in late spring and another in late summer or early fall. The berries are medium-sized and the plants throw fewer runners. They suit gardeners who want fresh fruit spread across the season rather than one big glut. Look for Ozark Beauty, Quinault, Fort Laramie, or Tribute.
Day-neutral strawberries are the steadiest producers, setting fruit continuously as long as temperatures stay roughly between 35 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. They fruit in their first year, make few runners, and slot beautifully into containers or the front of a border. Production per plant is lower than a June-bearer’s peak, but it never stops while conditions hold. Albion, Seascape, Monterey, and San Andreas are dependable.
A fourth group sits in its own category: alpine strawberries, also called wild or woodland strawberries. These compact plants produce tiny, intensely aromatic berries a few at a time and tolerate light shade better than the others. Many alpine types make no runners, so they stay tidy as edging and are usually grown from seed rather than runners.
For a first bed, June-bearers reward the wait with the biggest, sweetest haul. If you would rather snack a handful at a time all season, choose day-neutral. Plants or Seeds, and Where to Source Them
Almost every gardener should start with young plants, not seed. Watering Strawberries Without Drowning Them

- Everbearing and day-neutral strawberries can be fed in early spring as growth resumes, then again lightly every few weeks through the season, because they fruit continuously and draw nutrients steadily.
A balanced granular fertilizer such as a 10-10-10 works well; as a rough guide, use about one pound per 20-foot row, scattered around the base of the plants and watered in. Organic options like compost, well-rotted manure, blood meal, fish meal, or alfalfa meal do the same job more gently. Potassium and phosphorus drive fruit and root development while nitrogen builds leaves, so a feed weighted toward potassium once flower buds form helps fruiting. Mulching and Protecting the Crop

Keep the mulch slightly clear of the crown itself, since material piled against the crown can cause it to rot.
In cold-winter regions, mulch also serves as winter armor, and this is not optional where temperatures drop hard. A strawberry crown can be killed at around 15 degrees Fahrenheit. After two or three frosts have hardened the plants off and they enter dormancy, cover them with 4 to 6 inches of weed-free straw. Fruit is generally ready about four to six weeks after the blossoms open, and once it starts, check the plants every two to three days, since berries ripen on their own schedules. Beyond renovation, plan to start a fresh bed in a new location every three or four years using runners propagated from your healthiest plants, rather than moving old plants, which carry root pathogens with them. To propagate, in late summer peg the strongest runners into small pots of compost set beside the parent, keep them lightly moist until they root, then sever them from the mother plant and plant them out. This rolling replacement is what turns one purchase of plants into a strawberry patch that feeds you for years.
Growing Strawberries in Containers and Indoors
You do not need a garden bed to grow strawberries. Their compact roots and tidy habit make them excellent container plants for patios, balconies, and windowsills, and day-neutral types are especially well suited because they fruit continuously and make few messy runners.
For containers, any pot, trough, grow bag, or hanging basket works as long as it drains freely. Fill it with a quality potting mix blended with something to keep it open, such as perlite, and mix in a slow-release fertilizer. Tiered planters and hanging baskets have the bonus of letting berries dangle clear of the soil, which keeps them clean and away from slugs. Space plants about 8 inches apart, set crowns level with the surface, and put the container somewhere it gets the same six-plus hours of sun a bed would. The trade-off is maintenance: containers dry out fast and lose nutrients with every watering, so expect to water more often, even daily in heat, and feed more regularly than you would in the ground.
Growing indoors is possible where outdoor space is scarce, and the main hurdle is light. A bright, south-facing windowsill may be enough; if not, a grow light run 12 to 14 hours a day fills the gap. Reading Your Plants: Pests, Diseases, and Disorders

Fruit problems. Gray, fuzzy mold on the berries is botrytis (gray mold), the most common fruit rot, which spreads from berry to berry on contact and thrives when flowers and fruit stay wet for more than twelve hours. Light-brown sunken lesions that dry to a hard, shriveled mummy, often with salmon-colored spore masses in warm wet weather, are anthracnose, a destructive disease that can move fast through a patch. One distinction worth learning, because it is easy to misread, is frost damage versus tarnished plant bug damage, since both produce puckered, seedy, distorted berries. Tarnished plant bug damage concentrates at the tip of the berry, causing a “cat-faced” pucker, and the bug tends to hit several berries in a cluster.

The cultural defenses are the same across nearly all of them and across the fungal diseases too: full sun, generous spacing and narrow beds for airflow, watering the soil rather than the foliage and only in the morning, mulching to stop soil splashing spores onto fruit, frequent harvesting so overripe berries do not linger, removing and destroying infected fruit and old leaf debris, renovating June-bearing beds every year, and rotating to a fresh site every three to four years.
