Drop it in a sunny spot with decent drainage, and it rewards you with months of daisy-like blooms, a steady parade of butterflies and bees, and seed heads that feed goldfinches deep into winter. Aphids and whiteflies suck sap and can be knocked back with insecticidal soap; Japanese beetles chew holes in foliage and are best handpicked into soapy water. The one pest that confuses gardeners most is the eriophyid mite. These are microscopic and live inside the flower buds, and the telltale sign is a flower that develops a raised cone but few or no normal petals, often with strange green tufts sprouting from the cone.
