Few spring-flowering shrubs make a statement quite like a rhododendron. For one or two weeks each spring the broad evergreen leaves disappear behind huge trusses of pink, purple, red, white, or apricot flowers, and the rest of the year that glossy foliage anchors a shady corner of the garden. The catch is that rhododendrons are particular. Get the soil and the planting depth right, and they are remarkably low-maintenance for decades. Get those two things wrong, and no amount of watering or feeding will save them.

The leaves curling tightly inward on a cold day are the plant’s own defense against this water loss, and that curling alone is normal, not a cause for alarm.
You can reduce the risk by siting the shrub out of harsh, drying wind in the first place, and by screening exposed plants with burlap or a windbreak through the worst of winter. In late fall, an anti-desiccant spray applied on a dry day around 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit lays down a waxy coating that helps the leaves hold moisture. Yellow leaves (chlorosis). This is the single most common complaint, and it usually points to soil chemistry, not pests. When the soil pH climbs above 6.0, iron and other nutrients lock up and leaves yellow while the veins often stay green. Lichen on the branches does not harm the plant but signals slow growth or poor airflow, often from crowding, so thin and improve circulation.
Are Rhododendrons Toxic to Pets, and Do Deer Eat Them?
All parts of rhododendrons and azaleas are toxic if eaten, causing nausea, vomiting, drooling, breathing difficulty, and in large quantities serious symptoms or death, particularly in dogs; honey made from the flowers can be dangerous too. Serious poisoning from a small nibble is unlikely, but it is wise to supervise children and pets around the plants. Deer, unfortunately, browse rhododendrons readily, so in areas with heavy deer pressure plan on fencing or repellents, or expect occasional to frequent damage depending on the variety.
A note for gardeners in the UK and similar climates: Rhododendron ponticum is classed as an invasive species because it spreads aggressively by seed and layering, smothers native woodland plants, and can host the Phytophthora that causes Sudden Oak Death.
