Few houseplants pack as much color into so little space as the African violet. With proper care, an African violet will produce velvety rosettes of fuzzy leaves and clusters of purple, pink, blue, or white blooms several times a year, and a well-tended plant can keep going for decades. They have a reputation for being fussy, but that reputation comes down to a handful of specific preferences. Get the light, water, and feeding right, and these compact plants are some of the most rewarding flowering houseplants you can grow.

What an African Violet Actually Is
African violets are small, flowering houseplants native to the high-altitude cloud forests of eastern Africa. That origin matters: they evolved under the filtered light, steady warmth, and humidity of a rainforest canopy, which explains nearly every care preference they have.
For decades they were classified in the genus Saintpaulia (Saintpaulia ionantha). A 2015 genetic study reclassified them within the genus Streptocarpus, so you may now see them listed as Streptocarpus sect. Saintpaulia. Either name refers to the same familiar plant, which sits in the Gesneriaceae family alongside gloxinia and primrose.
The leaves are thick and fleshy, covered in fine hairs that give them a fuzzy, velvety texture. Depending on the variety, leaves can be round, oval, or heart-shaped, in shades from deep green to silvery green to creamy-edged variegation. Flowers come single, semi-double, double, ruffled, star, or wasp shaped, in white, pink, maroon, blue, lavender, and deep purple.
Growers usually sort African violets by the width of the rosette:
- Miniature and semi-miniature: less than 8 inches across
- Standard: 8 to 16 inches across
- Large: more than 16 inches across
Knowing the size class is useful, because it tells you how big a pot to aim for and how much space a mature plant will claim on the windowsill.
The Light African Violets Need
Light is the single biggest factor in whether an African violet blooms, and it is also the most common thing people get wrong. These plants want bright but indirect light, the kind that filters through a rainforest canopy rather than the harsh, direct sun of a south-facing window.
An east- or north-facing window is close to ideal. A bright east window gives gentle morning sun; a north window gives steady, cool light without scorching. If your only bright window faces south or west, set the plant a few feet back or hang a sheer curtain to soften the rays. Direct midday sun will burn the leaves.
The plant tells you when the light is off:
- Thin, dark green leaves and long, leggy stems reaching upward mean too little light. The plant is stretching and will rarely bloom.
- Pale, bleached, or yellowing leaves with crispy brown edges, or leaves that curl downward, mean too much light.
To bloom well, African violets need roughly 10 to 16 hours of bright light a day. Many growers find that artificial light is actually more reliable than a windowsill, especially in winter. A pair of 40-watt fluorescent tubes, or equivalent LED grow lights, placed 8 to 12 inches above the plants works well; pair one cool-white and one warm-white tube to cover the full spectrum. Whatever light source you use, the plant also needs a stretch of darkness each night, which matters more than most guides admit (see the blooming section below).
How to Water African Violets Without Rotting Them
Watering is where most African violets are lost. Their soft stems and crown are highly prone to rot, and root rot from overwatering is one of the most common reasons these plants die. The goal is soil that stays evenly moist, about as damp as a well-wrung-out sponge, never soggy and never bone dry.
A few rules apply no matter which method you choose:
- Use room-temperature water. Cold water leaves pale rings and spots on the leaves.
- Avoid softened or chlorinated tap water. Distilled water, rainwater, or reverse-osmosis water is safer; if you only have tap water, let it sit out overnight.
- Keep water off the foliage and out of the crown. Droplets sitting on fuzzy leaves cause spots, and water pooling in the crown invites rot.
There are three reliable ways to water:
Bottom watering. Set the pot in a shallow bowl or saucer with about an inch of room-temperature water. Leave it 15 to 30 minutes until the soil surface feels moist, then remove it and let the excess drain. Never leave the pot standing in water longer than half an hour.
Top watering. Use a narrow-spouted watering can, bottle, or baster and apply water directly to the soil, working around the leaves. Gently brush off any droplets that land on the foliage.
Wicking. For steady, hands-off moisture, thread a length of nylon or polyester string through the pot’s drainage hole before potting, leaving about 6 inches hanging out the bottom. Set the pot above a covered reservoir of water (with a pinch of dilute fertilizer) and feed the wick into it. The plant draws up exactly what it needs. Keep the wick from drying out and top up the reservoir as it empties. Self-watering African violet pots, which have a glazed outer reservoir and an unglazed inner pot, work on the same principle.
The Right Soil and Pot
African violets have fine, shallow roots that need air as much as moisture. They do best in a light, well-draining, soilless mix rather than dense garden soil. A peat-based African violet mix from the garden center works, as does a blend of equal parts coco coir or potting mix and perlite or vermiculite. Many growers cut a commercial African violet mix with about 50 percent perlite for extra drainage. Aim for a slightly acidic mix, around pH 6.2 to 6.5.
Pot choice matters as much as the mix. African violets bloom best when slightly under-potted and a little root-bound, so resist the urge to size up. As a rule, the pot diameter should be no more than about one-third the width of the leaf spread; a plant with a 9-inch spread of leaves belongs in roughly a 3-inch pot, with the lower leaves resting on the rim. A too-large pot holds water the roots cannot reach, which leads straight to rot. Whatever container you use, it must have drainage holes, and the plant should never sit in standing water.
Temperature and Humidity Indoors
If you are comfortable, your African violet probably is too. They like ordinary room temperatures between about 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with an ideal around 70, and they dislike sudden drafts. Keep them above 65 degrees where you can; cold air below the mid-50s at night chills the roots, curls the leaves, and stalls blooming.
Coming from a humid forest, African violets appreciate humidity in the 40 to 60 percent range, which is higher than most heated or air-conditioned homes provide in winter. You can raise local humidity without wetting the leaves by grouping plants together or setting the pot on a tray of pebbles topped with water. Keep the pot resting on the pebbles, just above the waterline, never sitting in the water itself.
Feeding African Violets for Steady Blooms
To keep producing flowers, African violets need a steady, gentle supply of nutrients. The small pots they grow in hold only a tiny reserve, so the plant depends almost entirely on what you feed it, yet they are also easily burned. Underfeeding is safer than overfeeding.
A fertilizer formulated specifically for African violets is the simplest choice. If you use a general houseplant product instead, pick a balanced, water-soluble formula containing all three major nutrients: nitrogen for leaves and stems, phosphorus for roots and flowers, and potassium for overall vigor. Formulas slightly higher in phosphorus, such as an 8-14-9 analysis, lean toward flowering. Too much high-nitrogen fertilizer does the opposite, pushing lush leaves at the expense of blooms.
One detail most care sheets skip: the African Violet Society of America recommends avoiding fertilizers that use urea as the nitrogen source, because African violets are sensitive to it and it can burn their roots. The Guaranteed Analysis on the label lists the nitrogen source, so you can check before buying.
Feed lightly and often rather than heavily. A common approach is a very dilute dose, around a quarter of the recommended strength, with most waterings during spring and summer, tapering off in winter. Always moisten dry soil with plain water before fertilizing to avoid root burn, and flush the pot with plain water once a month to wash out built-up fertilizer salts.
Repotting and Fixing a Bare Neck
Repot African violets about once a year, mostly to refresh the soil and flush out the mineral salts that accumulate from watering and feeding. Because the plant prefers snug quarters, you usually move it back into the same size pot, or one only slightly larger, with fresh mix.
Over time the lowest leaves die back and the bottom of the stem becomes a bare, woody segment known as a “neck.” This is normal aging, and there is a tidy fix. Lift the plant from its pot and slice off a section of the bottom of the root ball equal in length to the bare neck. Then replant it in the same pot, settling it deeper so fresh mix covers the neck right up to the lowest leaves. New roots will grow from the buried stem. After repotting, slip the plant into a clear plastic bag or under a cloche for a week or so to raise the humidity and ease transplant shock.
Pruning, Grooming, and Cleaning the Leaves
African violets need very little pruning. The main task is grooming: remove faded flowers and the outer ring of older, yellowing leaves as they age, using sharp scissors, a small pruner, or tweezers. Pinching off spent blooms, a form of deadheading, redirects the plant’s energy toward producing new flowers.
Keep the leaves clean, too, since dust dims the light they can absorb. Because the fuzzy surface traps water and spots easily, do not wipe leaves with a wet cloth. Instead, brush dust off gently with a soft, dry artist’s paintbrush or a dry soft cloth. The leaves are delicate and sensitive, so handle them only when you need to groom or clean.
How to Get an African Violet to Bloom Again
A healthy African violet should rebloom over and over, so when the flowers stop, work through the conditions in order. Light is almost always the first culprit. Without enough bright, indirect light, the plant simply lacks the energy to set buds. Move it to a brighter window or add a grow light, aiming for at least 10 to 12 hours of light daily.
Just as important, and frequently overlooked, is darkness. African violets produce a flowering hormone called florigen in the light, but that hormone does not actually trigger blooming until the plant gets a stretch of darkness, ideally around 8 hours each night. If you run grow lights more than 16 hours a day, the plant never gets its dark period and may stop flowering despite plenty of light. So give it bright days and genuinely dark nights.
Then check the rest of the balance:
- Watering: keep the soil evenly moist. Roots damaged by either soggy or bone-dry soil make the plant sacrifice flowers to survive.
- Temperature: hold it between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit; too hot or too cold both stop bud development.
- Fertilizer: feed regularly but lightly with a balanced or African violet formula, since starved plants cannot fund flowers and over-fed ones grow leaves instead.
- Pot size: African violets bloom best slightly root-bound. A pot that is too large diverts energy into roots and foliage rather than flowers.
Propagating African Violets From a Leaf
One of the most satisfying things about African violets is how easily a single leaf becomes a whole new plant. Choose a healthy, mature leaf and cut it off with about an inch of stem (the petiole) attached. Insert the cut stem into a small pot of damp, soilless mix, firming it gently so part of the leaf base touches the soil; this is where new growth forms.
To keep humidity high while it roots, slip the pot into a clear plastic bag and set it in bright but indirect light, or beneath a fluorescent light. Keep the mix evenly moist. In a few weeks, small plantlets will sprout at the base of the leaf. Once a cluster has four to six little leaves, separate the plantlets from the mother leaf and pot them up individually.
Common African Violet Problems and What They Mean
Most African violet troubles trace back to overwatering, underwatering, or the wrong light, and the plant usually shows you which by how it looks. Use these symptoms as a diagnostic guide:
- No flowers, with long, narrow leaves and leggy stems: too little light, and often too-cool temperatures. Move to brighter light, add a grow light, and warm the room.
- Pale, bleached-looking leaves: too much light. Move the plant somewhere with gentler, indirect light.
- Pale leaves with little growth and no flowers: likely a nutrient deficiency from infrequent feeding. Begin a regular, dilute feeding routine.
- Tight, stunted center with rusty-colored small leaves: over-fertilizing. Flush the pot with plain water and cut back to feeding every other watering.
- Spots or rings on the leaves: water left sitting on the foliage, often cold water. Switch to bottom watering and use room-temperature water.
- Limp, wilted plant even when the soil is moist: classic overwatering, poor drainage, and root rot. Repot into a well-draining mix and a pot that is not too large. If the roots are mushy, brown, and slimy, the plant may be too far gone to save.
Disease and pests are less common but worth watching for. Crown and root rot follow soggy soil and a wet crown, so the prevention is simply careful watering and good drainage. Powdery mildew shows up as white patches on leaves and is encouraged by stagnant, humid air; improving airflow and keeping foliage dry helps. Botrytis blight can cause browning and collapse of blooms in damp conditions. The pests most likely to bother African violets are mealybugs, spider mites, aphids, and thrips; catch them early and treat promptly.
