Rubber plant care is far more forgiving than its dramatic, glossy foliage suggests. The rubber plant (Ficus elastica) earns its reputation as one of the easiest indoor trees to keep alive, shrugging off the leaf-dropping tantrums that make its cousins, the weeping fig and fiddle-leaf fig, so frustrating. Give it bright light, water it on a sensible rhythm, and it will reward you with thick, leathery leaves that can stretch a foot long and a plant that climbs from tabletop size to a 6-to-10-foot living sculpture over the years.
Native to the forests of Southeast Asia, where it can balloon into a 50-to-100-foot banyan-style tree with aerial roots, Ficus elastica stays a manageable, upright statement plant indoors. It is a smart pick for beginners, but a few specific habits separate a thriving specimen from one that sulks, yellows, and sheds. How much light a rubber plant needs
Rubber plants thrive in bright, indirect light, and getting this right solves most of the problems people run into later. They tolerate medium light better than most ficus, but “tolerate” is not “thrive.” In a genuinely dim corner, the plant leans hard toward the nearest window, stretches leggy and sparse, and grows noticeably smaller leaves.
Keep the plant out of hot, direct afternoon sun pressed against the glass, which can scorch the leaves. Rotate the pot a quarter turn every couple of weeks so it grows evenly instead of lopsided.
One detail the labels rarely explain: variegated rubber plants need more light than the plain dark-green types.
