You walk out to your tomato patch expecting lush green foliage and instead find bare stems, stripped stalks, and a few ragged holes chewed into fruit that was nearly ripe. The damage looks like it happened overnight, and in a sense it did. The most likely culprit is the tomato hornworm, a plump green caterpillar that can reach the length of your finger and strip a plant of its leaves in a matter of days.
The good news is that this is one of the easiest serious garden pests to control once you know what you are looking for. A tomato hornworm is large, slow, and harmless to handle, and a handful of simple tactics will keep it from ruining your crop without a single drop of synthetic insecticide. Below is a complete field guide to identifying the pest, spotting the early warning signs, and clearing it out for good, plus the prevention steps that keep next year’s population low.
What a Tomato Hornworm Actually Is
The tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata) is the larval, or caterpillar, stage of a large night-flying moth known as the five-spotted hawk moth or sphinx moth. The adult is a heavy-bodied, mottled gray-brown insect with a wingspan of four to five inches and a row of yellow spots down each side of its abdomen. After dusk you may see it hovering at flowers like an oversized hummingbird, sipping nectar through a long tongue. The adult moth does no damage at all. All of the destruction comes from its offspring.
Hornworms feed almost exclusively on members of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). Tomatoes are the clear favorite, but the caterpillars will also work through eggplant, peppers, potatoes, and tobacco, along with weedy relatives such as horsenettle, jimsonweed, and nightshade. The pest is found across most of the United States and from northern Mexico up into southern Canada, so almost every home gardener who grows tomatoes will eventually meet one.
Because a single caterpillar eats so much and a plant may host several at once, a small number of hornworms can defoliate a tomato plant remarkably fast. The last larval stage alone consumes nearly as much foliage as all of the earlier stages combined, which is why a plant can look untouched one week and skeletal the next.
How to Identify a Tomato Hornworm
A full-grown tomato hornworm is one of the largest caterpillars you will find in a North American garden, reaching three to four inches long, and occasionally up to five. Look for these features:
- Color: Bright pale green, almost the exact shade of a tomato leaf.
- Markings: A series of eight white, V-shaped marks along each side of the body.
- Horn: A single dark, pointed projection, the “horn,” curving up from the rear segment. It looks menacing but cannot sting or bite.
- Body: Smooth and fat, with several pairs of stubby clasping legs that grip the stems.
Very young hornworms look different from the adults you are used to seeing. Newly hatched caterpillars are yellow to white with no markings at all, and only develop the characteristic V-shaped stripes as they grow. The eggs themselves are smooth, oval, and light green, laid singly on the upper and lower surfaces of leaves in late spring and again in midsummer. Catching the eggs or the tiny first-stage caterpillars is the single most effective time to act, because they are far easier to kill before they start doing real damage.
Tomato Hornworm Versus Tobacco Hornworm
The two are routinely confused, and you will often find them on the same plant. The distinction does not change how you control them, but it is worth knowing.
- Tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata): White V-shaped or chevron markings; a dark, blackish horn. The adult has five yellow spots on each side of the abdomen.
- Tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta): Straight diagonal white stripes, sometimes edged with small dark spots; a reddish or pink horn. More common in the southeastern states, and the adult carries six yellow spots per side.
Either way, the feeding damage is the same and so are the remedies.
The Damage Signs That Give Them Away
The caterpillar’s camouflage is its best defense. A green hornworm lying along a green stem is genuinely hard to see, and many gardeners never spot the insect itself until most of the harm is done. That is why it pays to learn the secondary clues, which are far more obvious than the pest:
- Defoliation from the top down. Hornworms tend to start on the upper leaves and growing tips, so the first sign is often bare stems and missing foliage at the top of the plant while the lower leaves still look fine.
- Frass. As they feed, hornworms drop large, dark green to black droppings called frass. These pellets are unmistakable, far bigger than the droppings of most garden pests, and they collect on lower leaves and on the soil directly beneath a feeding caterpillar.
- Wilted, bare stalks stripped of leaves, sometimes with the green skin of stems chewed.
- Chewed fruit and sunscald. Hornworms gouge shallow holes in green and ripening tomatoes, and the loss of leaf cover exposes the remaining fruit to sunscald.
A practical scouting trick is to work backward from the frass. When you spot a cluster of fresh dark droppings on a leaf or on the ground, look straight up from that spot. The caterpillar that produced them is almost always feeding on the foliage directly overhead. Following the trail of damage and droppings is often the fastest way to locate a worm you would otherwise walk right past.
Finding the Camouflaged Caterpillar With a UV Flashlight
The single most reliable way to find hornworms, especially when their numbers are high, is to hunt at night with an ultraviolet blacklight. Hornworms fluoresce under UV light, glowing a vivid yellow-green against the dark stems while the surrounding foliage stays dim. Worms that are invisible in daylight light up like tiny markers.
To do this, wait until full dark, when the caterpillars are also more active and out in the open feeding. Carry a UV flashlight or blacklight and play the beam slowly over the whole plant, including stem undersides and the interior. A longer-wavelength UV light intended for biological use works far better than the kind sold mainly for detecting industrial leaks, so if a blacklight seems not to work, a different unit may simply be the wrong wavelength. Gardeners who think they have only a few hornworms by day routinely find many times that number under the blacklight at night.
If you would rather not buy a UV light, an ordinary bright flashlight in the evening still helps, because the worms come into the open to feed after dusk and are easier to catch sight of against the dark.
How to Get Rid of Tomato Hornworms
For the home garden, you rarely need anything beyond your hands and a little persistence. Work through these methods roughly in order.
Handpicking
Handpicking is the most effective single control for a home gardener, full stop. Because the caterpillars are so large, they are easy to grab once located. Pick each one off and drop it into a bucket of soapy water to kill it, or feed it to backyard chickens, which relish them. Hornworms neither bite nor sting, but if the size makes you squeamish, wear garden gloves.
Inspect plants at least twice a week through the summer, and daily during an active outbreak. The combination of frass tracking by day and a UV light by night will turn up nearly every worm on the plant.
Leave the Parasitized Ones Alone
Before you remove a hornworm, check its back. If you see a cluster of small white projections that look like grains of puffed rice standing up from the body, do not kill that caterpillar. Those are the cocoons of a tiny parasitic braconid wasp, Cotesia congregata. The female wasp lays her eggs under the caterpillar’s skin; the larvae feed inside it, then bore out and spin those white cocoons on its back. The hornworm is already doomed and largely stops feeding, so it can no longer harm your plants.
Leaving it in place, or moving it to a sacrificial plant where it can live out its days, lets a fresh generation of braconid wasps emerge. Those wasps then go hunting for the next round of hornworms in your garden, giving you free, self-renewing control. Killing a parasitized worm only destroys your future allies.
Encourage Other Natural Predators
The braconid wasp is the headliner, but it has company. Paper wasps (Polistes species) actively hunt caterpillars and carry them off to feed their own young. Lady beetles and green lacewings attack hornworm eggs and the youngest larvae. Birds take them as well. A garden that is not blanketed in broad-spectrum insecticide keeps all of these predators on patrol, which is one more reason to lean on physical control before reaching for sprays.
Bt and Spinosad for Heavy Infestations
If you are overrun, or the planting is too large to pick by hand, two organic-approved products handle hornworms effectively while sparing most beneficial insects.
- Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk) is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that the caterpillar must eat for it to work. Once ingested it paralyzes the insect’s digestive system, the worm stops feeding, and it dies within a few days. Btk is specific to caterpillars and does not harm bees, wasps, or other beneficials. It works best on small caterpillars under about two inches, has no lasting residue, and needs reapplying every five to seven days to stay effective.
- Spinosad, derived from another soil microorganism, attacks the nervous system of chewing insects. It is most potent when ingested, holds activity for roughly one to two weeks, and so usually needs fewer applications than Btk. It is toxic to bees while the spray is still wet, so apply it in the evening after pollinators have left and let it dry.
Both are far gentler choices than conventional broad-spectrum insecticides such as the pyrethroids, which kill the very predators and parasitic wasps that would otherwise be controlling hornworms for you. Reserve those harsh products for the rare case where nothing else is practical, and treat while the caterpillars are still small.
How to Prevent Tomato Hornworms Next Season
Control is reactive. Prevention shrinks the population before the worms ever hatch, and it starts in the soil.
Till the Soil to Kill Overwintering Pupae
When a mature hornworm finishes feeding, it drops to the ground and burrows four to six inches into the soil, where it forms a hard, dark reddish-brown pupa, often described as looking like it has a small handle or loop on one end. The pupae of the season’s final generation overwinter there and emerge as moths the following spring to start the cycle again.
Turning the soil with a tiller or shovel in fall, and again in spring, breaks open these pupation chambers, exposes the pupae to cold and to predators, and destroys most of them. Done thoroughly, fall tilling can kill the large majority of overwintering pupae, dramatically lowering next year’s pressure. Rototilling the bed at the end of the season is one of the highest-value preventive jobs you can do.
Use Companion and Trap Plants
A few plants can tip the odds in your favor when interplanted with tomatoes.
- Basil is the classic tomato companion and is widely used to help deter hornworms along with thrips and aphids.
- Marigolds give off strong-smelling oils that repel a range of pests, including the hawk moth that lays the eggs. Plant them along the bed edges.
- Borage acts as a repellent and, allowed to flower, its blue star-shaped blooms draw bees and predatory wasps.
- Dill plays a double role. Its flowers, like those of fennel and other carrot-family plants, are magnets for the braconid wasps and other beneficials you want patrolling. Some gardeners also use dill as a trap crop, since hornworms will feed on it, drawing them away from tomatoes where they are easier to find and remove. Pulling out a healthy dill plant beside your tomatoes can leave the patch more exposed, so think twice before yanking it.
To bring in more braconid wasps specifically, grow clusters of small nectar-rich flowers such as sweet alyssum, chamomile, yarrow, and catmint near the vegetable beds.
Scout Early, Rotate, and Cover
Three more habits round out a prevention program. First, check plants twice a week from early summer on, and inspect leaf undersides for the small green eggs, since destroying eggs and first-stage larvae is far easier than fighting full-grown worms. Second, rotate your crops so tomatoes and their nightshade relatives are not planted in the same ground year after year, which denies emerging moths a convenient host right where they overwintered. Third, keep down weedy host plants like nightshade and jimsonweed nearby, which otherwise serve as a reservoir for the pest.
A Word for the Moth Itself
It is worth remembering what you are dealing with at the other end of the life cycle. The adult five-spotted hawk moth is a pollinator, feeding harmlessly on nectar and never touching your plants. The damage is entirely the work of the caterpillar stage. Controlling hornworms is about protecting the crop, not waging war on the moth, and the most effective approach leans on the natural predators and parasites already living in a healthy garden.
