For a few small plants, improvised cloches do the job. A clear 2-liter bottle with the bottom cut off, a milk jug, a paper bag, or a newspaper tent over a lettuce or seedling traps enough warmth to beat a light frost. For a longer, more permanent extension, a cold frame or a mini hoop tunnel built from PVC pipe over rebar can keep hardy salad greens and cool-season crops going for weeks past the first frost, sometimes through much of winter in milder regions.
Garden design and siting build in frost resistance for next year
Beyond the night-of scramble, the layout of your garden quietly decides how much frost you fight. A plot that slopes toward the sun warms more during the day and stores more residual heat for the night. What you do after a frost matters as much as what you did before
The mistake most gardeners make is reaching for the pruners the morning after a frost. Resist it.
