Few shrubs reward you the way a gardenia does. The creamy, rose-like blooms perfume an entire porch on a warm evening, and the glossy evergreen leaves look good long after the flowers fade. Cultivated gardenias are evergreen shrubs prized for two things: waxy white-to-cream flowers, often double and intensely fragrant, and lustrous dark-green foliage that holds through the year.
Mature size depends entirely on the cultivar. Low ground-cover types stay around 1 to 2 feet tall, classic landscape shrubs reach 4 to 6 feet, and the largest, treated almost as small trees, can top 8 feet. Most varieties bloom from late spring into early summer, with some reblooming sporadically through the warm months. The scent peaks in the evening and early morning, which is worth remembering when you decide where to plant.

Yellowing at other times of year is the plant telling you something is off.

Root rot is caused by soil-borne fungi, most often Phytophthora, in wet, poorly drained, or over-irrigated soil, and is worsened by planting too deeply. Above ground it shows as yellowing of the oldest leaves first, leaf drop, and wilting, sometimes on just one side of the plant. A healthy root system has white feeder roots; rotted roots are brown and mushy, with the outer tissue sliding off to leave a thread-like core. Prevention is the only reliable control: check roots before buying, ensure good drainage, and use a raised bed where soil stays soggy.
Powdery mildew, caused by the fungus Erysiphe polygoni, appears as a whitish-gray powdery coating, usually on the upper leaf surface, peaking in late summer. It deforms young leaves and buds and can cause yellowing and leaf drop. Improve air circulation by spacing plants properly, prune out and destroy affected tissue, and rake up fallen leaves. Stem canker, from the fungus Phomopsis gardeniae, shows as dark, sunken lesions on stems near the soil line, entering through wounds. Sooty mold looks alarming, a charcoal-black coating over the leaves, but it does not infect the plant. It grows on honeydew, the sugary excretion left by sap-sucking insects such as aphids, scales, whiteflies, mealybugs, and leafhoppers.
