This is a sterile, essentially fruitless cultivar, originally discovered in North Carolina, that sets little to no fruit and therefore drops few or no gumballs. The sweet gum has no serious, tree-threatening pest or disease problems across most of its range, and is generally considered a tough, low-trouble tree. Several minor issues can show up, however, and are worth recognizing.

On the insect side, scale, borers, webworms, and various caterpillars may appear, especially on stressed trees. Healthy, well-watered trees usually shrug these off, and keeping the tree vigorous through proper siting and establishment watering is the best defense. The leaves also feed several large native moth caterpillars, including luna and imperial moths, which is a benefit to wildlife rather than a problem to be sprayed.

On the disease side, leaf spots can blemish foliage in wet years but rarely harm the tree’s health.
